Constitutional Change for Scottish Court Service (SCS)

   6 April 2010

From 01 April 2010, the Scottish Court Service is no longer a Government Agency responsible to Scottish Ministers but an independant body governed by a Corporate Board.

This marks a major constitutional change for one of AiB's key stakeholders. The new arrangements for SCS arises from the Judiciary and Courts (Scotland) Act 2008 and mirrors similar changes in other parts of the UK and elsewhere to separate responsibility for administration of the courts from direct ministerial control.

These changes aim to improve service delivery for those using the courts including AiB, its customers and other stakeholders.

A spokesperson for SCS said:

"The new governance arrangements for the Scottish Court Service ensure that strategic decisions about the service are taken by a Board whose members include those with direct experience of the day-to-day operation of the courts. The Board, which is chaired by the Lord President, will have a strong voice in shaping plans for the judicial system as a whole and a focus on the long term development of the service."
