Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB) has released official statistics reporting statutory debt solutions and company insolvencies in Scotland for the financial year 2024-25.

Scottish Statutory Debt Solutions Statistics for 2024-25

  • There were 7,403 personal insolvencies (bankruptcies and PTDs) in 2024-25, 679 (8.4%) less than in the previous financial year (2023-24).
  • Bankruptcies decreased by 0.5% from 2,495 to 2,483 and PTDs decreased by 11.9% from 5,587 to 4,920 when compared with 2023-24.
  • There were 3,610 applications for moratoria granted in 2024-25. This is 134 (3.9%) more than the figure of 3,476 granted in 2023-24.
  • In 2024-25, a total of 1,970 bankruptcy awards were made following applications submitted to AiB (excluding petitions), all through the revised fee structure. Of this total, 1,840 (93.4%) applicants were not required to pay any fee at all.
  • There were 5,292 debt payment programmes (DPPs) under the DAS approved in 2024-25, compared with 5,278 approved in 2023-24 representing an increase of 0.3%.
  • There were 2,145 DPPs under the DAS completed in 2024-25, an increase of 17.5% compared with 1,826 in 2023-24. This is not unexpected given the rising volume of DPPs; Of the 18,570 live DPPs at the beginning of 2024-25 11.6% were completed this year, compared with 10.9% in 2023-24.
  • There were 1,809 DPPs under the DAS revoked in 2024-25, 207 (12.9%) more than the 1,602 revoked in 2023-24. Again, this reflects the increasing number of DPPs; 9.7% of live cases at the start of the year were revoked in 2024-25, compared with 9.6% in 2023-24.
  • Corporate insolvencies (include receivership appointments, compulsory liquidations, and creditors’ voluntary liquidations) increased by 0.6% from 1,168 in 2023-24 to 1,175 in 2024-25.

The figures released today were produced in accordance with the professional standards set out in the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
